Mmorpg economics for dummies

  • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 1:06 PM

What does economics in a computer game work? What impact does it have on a players gaming experience? Does it promote or demote the general experince of a person playing the game, or is it simply there as an extra feature?
In the following I'll explain a bit about the economics, and why it should, or shouldn't be in an mmorpg.

As in real life, most games are build with an econimics system. Some games have more complex systems than others, and some tend not to lean too much on it.
One game, for an example, is World of Warcraft:

In this game you gain money buy completing quests, or buy killing humanoid opponents. You can also find items on enemies you then either sell to an AI vendor, or you resell it to another player in the game. It's quite simple, and it's easily done. Another example would be eve online. This game, however, has a lot more complex economics system. In this game, you can actually take the part of a trader, not doing much more in the game than buying and selling things to other players.
In these new worlds, money plays a great role, as they do in real life. You need money for food, clothes, armor and weapons. Even mounts or space ships can be needed, and as such, a much needed investment. Of course, things you buy need repairs, and that also costs money. Some games have maintenance for buildings and ships, or what other transportation or habitat you might have.
Though, admittetly, it can be quite tiresome to keep grinding items, or monsters to gain enough money to make your computer life worth living, some people have actually made quite the impressive amounts. One guy actually made more than a million in-game gold in world of warcraft.. and for those who don't know how much that is... I'll tell you : It's a lot!!!
You can read more about that guy by following the link below.
But all in all, I think economics are needed in these games, because we use them as a second life really. A more relaxed life of course, but we tend to accept things closer to our real life. Who would want to play a game where you would get everything for free? I think it's the strain in getting the cash, that make people come back to the game. The idea of becoming rich while being entertained is appealing for a lot of people. Games should contain some level of realism, otherwise it won't last long.

So, check out the link below to read more about economics in the mmorpg world, or just to see how some people actually play their lives in a different way. Making money, is just not for a real life experience, it's for life!

Who will be the next millionaire?

  • Jun. 19th, 2008 at 11:09 PM

f you, like me, are sick of running around farming all day, just to pay your repair bills, and whatever food you need to do so, you might want to read on!

I've discovered a nice treat for the wow player, be that the hardcore gamer, og the casual person who logs on once in a while. It's called Warcraft millionaire.

It's a compendium of how to work the game to gain the most!

This is why he made his guide!

Warcraft Millionaire was born out of a single purpose. I was spending days at a time helping my friends unlock the gold making secrets that had made me rich and while I was happy to do it, I couldn’t help but wonder, “what about all of the other guides out there? Why aren’t they helping these players make the gold I’m helping them make?” I did some research, read the other guides and started learning what it was that many people think is good gold making advice.
The basic formula was always the same: Use the Auction House, do your daily quests, grind for random stuff, and utilize your professions and you to can make 200 gold an hour.

The bar was set so low I couldn’t see underneath it and I knew that I could do better. So, I set out to revamp the entire concept of a gold guide. What you get in Warcraft Millionaire is not just another list of things you should be looking for when you grind; it is a comprehensive program that starts with the very basics.
When you played sports in school, what was the first thing you learned how to do? Was it to dunk or throw a curveball? Of course not! No one starts at the top; they have nothing to build off and only risk injury and embarrassment.
The exact same thing is true for World of Warcraft gold making. You cannot start at the top or you will never learn how to do the basics correctly. Sure, everyone can tell you to use the Auction House, but if you don’t know when to buy, when to sell, how much to bid, and what items to sell, what good does that piece of information provide? – Then the answer is simple, none.

At first I didn't really believe it, so I didn't really look further into at first, but after 1 week or so, I talked to a friend of mine who had already accuired the WoW millionaire guide. He told me that "this ¤&%¤ really works, man!, I've earned like 3k in 2 days!".

So I decided to go back and get a copy for myself, and to see if it really was that easy to make money. It wasn't like I had anything to lose, other than a couple of hours of my life, by reading it. A couple of hours I would spend in an overcamped spot ingame anyways.

So here I am, 25 days later writing this blog for you! I am around 23.000 gold pieces richer!! yes, it's true! 23.000! And I bought my epic mount + a lot of stuff as well.
I have so much money, I don't really know what to do with it other than making twinks and just buying the stuff from the AH.

The conclusion is, get a copy yourself, if you don't belive me! You won't regret it.

There's another site here which also writes a bit about the wow millionaire, you can find it here at squidoo.

Spyware is stealing from you!

  • Jun. 12th, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Have you ever noticed your computer as being a bit slow when opening programs such as internet explorer or words etc?
Is it taking forever to surf because every site is loading really, really slow?

Well, you might have the same problem I've had several times over the years. Spyware or Malware!

What is that? - You might ask.

Spyware and Malware are small programs which installs themselves onto your computer, even when you are only surfing the web!
They're mostly hidden away in freeware, homepages or you can get them through links in your email!

Normally the spyware won't hurt you a lot. What it does exactly is never for sure, but they send information to somewhere, information about your surfing habits and your shopping habits. This is used for firms trying to market their products or to find out what people want and need. Although spyware of this sort takes away your privacy, it's the least dangerous form.

Malware, on the other hand, is a more malicious type of spyware. It installs itself onto your computer, and can, like the "normal" spyware see where you're going on the net etc. BUT - there's a huge difference. Malware can also register which keys you press on the keyboard! So, if you're shopping on the internet using a credit card, you could really easily be the victim of internet crime!
Other kinds of malware opens backdoors to your computer making the author of the program able to enter your computer at his or her will. Again, this opens for a new kind of crime - theft! Pictures, passwords etc. are easily copied.

If you would like a more detailed description of the most common spyware/malware and how to get rid of it, you can check out this page

I've used that site for information on how to scan and how to get rid of any spyware on my computer. Do yourself a favor and read it!
